Climbing Photography

A recent project of mine involves taking photos that showcase community. I chose to photograph my local climbing gym since its somewhere I visit frequently, and it has a good sense of community. This was a challenge because this is an entirely fresh style of photography for me. A lot of the climbing photos I saw when researching for this topic, relied on highlighting huge drops, or stunning backgrounds to create a good shot. Being limited to an indoor bouldering gym, I had to rethink how to take these photos and keep the sense of drama and intensity, while still conveying the sense of community and realism. This project also involves as much documentary photography as it does sport; I wanted to make sure that I got some shots off the wall, such as training on a pull up bar, hang boards or campus boards, and to showcase the full routine of a climber from as soon as they set foot in the gym, to as soon as they leave. I feel that this is the best way to show something to be as genuine as possible. The other main challenge I had when on location, was the other people at the wall. I wanted to focus only on the model. This limited me with compositions as I had to take shots that didn’t include other people in the background. I do believe however that this allowed me to get some shots that turned out better than if I didn’t have to worry about this at all. Overall, I am happy with how these shots turned out considering it was my first-time taking photos like this. The editing is my favourite part of this genre of photography, and I loved finding the balance between over saturated, and flat to create shots that stood out.
